Have an Idea for a Custom Crochet Gift? Here’s How It Works

A question that never fails to fill my heart with joy:

“Can you make this?”

Sometimes it starts with a photo. Sometimes it is a link someone saw while scrolling. Sometimes it is a half-formed idea that begins with, “This might be weird, but...”

And honestly, those are some of my favorite messages to get.

Someone sees one of my posts, thinks of something they would love to have made, and sends it my way. Maybe it is a pet they adore. Maybe it is a favorite character. Maybe it is a color, a memory, an inside joke, or a gift idea they cannot quite find anywhere else.

That is the fun of custom crochet. It starts as a little spark in someone else’s mind, and then I get to help turn it into something they can actually hold.

If you have ever wondered whether you can request a custom crochet gift, the answer is usually yes. And no, you do not need to know crochet terms, yarn types, stitch names, or exactly how the whole thing should work.

You just need an idea.

What is a custom crochet commission?

A custom crochet commission is a handmade piece created from your request.

That could mean making a crochet version of a pet, choosing specific colors, adjusting the size of an existing design, or creating something completely new from a photo, theme, or little thought you cannot get out of your head.

It is different from buying a ready-to-ship item because the piece is made with your request in mind. It is also different from walking into a store and grabbing something off a shelf. Custom crochet takes time, planning, and a little back-and-forth.

But that is also what makes it special.

It is not just another gift. It is something made because you thought of someone specific.

What kinds of custom crochet gifts can you request?

Custom crochet can go in a lot of directions. Some ideas are simple. Others take more planning.

A few common custom requests include small plushies, pet-inspired pieces, favorite creatures, color-customized versions of existing items, teacher gifts, keepsake pieces, holiday decor, baby gifts, and soft little desk buddies.

You do not have to come with a perfect plan. A lot of custom orders begin with something like:

“I saw this, but could you make it more like my dog?”

Or:

“My friend loves mushrooms, pink, and weird little things. Can we do something with that?”

That is enough to start.

What should you send?

The best thing you can do is send whatever helps explain the idea.

That might include reference photos, screenshots, colors you like, size expectations, who the gift is for, and when you need it by.

If it is pet-inspired, send a few clear photos. Front, side, and any markings or features that matter most.

If it is based on a character, creature, outfit, object, or theme, send the image that gave you the idea. If there are specific details you care about, say that upfront.

If you are not picky, say that too. Sometimes creative freedom makes the final piece even better.

A good request does not need to be complicated. It just needs to answer a few basic questions:

What are we making? Who is it for? What details matter most? When do you need it? What budget range are you hoping to stay within?

What happens after you ask?

Usually, the process starts with a conversation.

You send the idea, reference photos, and any details you already know. From there, I’ll review what you sent and let you know whether it is something I can make, what the rough cost may be, and what the timeline looks like.

Sometimes I may ask a few questions. That does not mean your idea is unclear. It just means I want to understand what matters most before I start.

Once everything is agreed on, I get to work.

That is my favorite part.

The yarn comes out. The idea starts taking shape. And slowly, something that used to live in a photo, a message, or someone’s imagination turns into a real little handmade thing.

You do not need to have it all figured out

If you are thinking about ordering a custom crochet gift, you do not need a perfect plan before reaching out.

Send the idea.

Send the photo.

Send the message that starts with, “This might be weird, but...”

Those are usually the best ones.

Custom crochet is a small kind of magic. Someone thinks of a thing, sends it over, and then stitch by stitch, it becomes real.

And every time someone asks, “Can you make this?”

I still get excited to say, “Let’s see what we can do.”
